New Delhi, 23 October 2026: Indian Railways recorded 22.5% growth in coal loading during 1–18 October against the same period of 2025, the Ministry of Railways announced through PIB on 22 October. The ministry described the performance as an all-time record.

Coal Transportation: Key Figures

Reporting period Performance Comparison
1–18 October 2026 Coal loading up 22.5%;
87 additional rakes daily
Corresponding period of 2025
First half, FY2026–27 430 coal rakes daily to thermal power plants;
up 7.1%
Corresponding half-year
September 2026 Daily coal-rake dispatches up 14% September 2025

Energy Demand and Power-Station Supplies

The ministry linked stronger coal demand to rising energy use, higher industrial output and below-normal rainfall in parts of India. It said consistent evacuation had supported stable fuel stocks at thermal generating stations and reliable electricity production.

Coordination Across Three Ministries

Indian Railways is working with the Ministry of Coal on evacuation and with the Ministry of Power on transportation and supply. The stated objective is to sustain adequate power-station stocks and meet national energy requirements.

What the Figures Mean for the Industry

For freight planners, the reporting periods matter: the October comparison covers only the first 18 days, while the power-plant average covers a half-year. These measures should be read separately when assessing dispatch trends.

Rake counts describe train movements; they should not be treated as tonnes transported without information about train composition and payload. Likewise, a rise in loading does not by itself establish a change in freight revenue or network capacity.

The announcement provides an operational snapshot of coal logistics. Continued coordination between railway operations, coal evacuation and power-station demand remains central to the supply objective described by the ministry.
